The design intent of this dog home is to promote interactive play between one or more dogs while still serving as their personal home. The three main activities of play for dogs are running (tunnels), jumping/climbing (stairs), and chasing (fetch). This home has elements of all three with a big emphasis on the fetch part allowing the dog to play independently while the owner is away. The color scheme, form, material choice, and even the name are to be representative of the nature of “play” taking inspiration from Picasso.

Children can sit at the table to read, play with blocks on the table top, store their favorite toys in the drawers, and even draw on the table itself with dry-erase markers, all while spending time with their pet who can play and lay in the nooks underneath the table. The table and drawers are made of natural wood, while the table top and two sides are wrapped in marker board material. The Cave

By

This free-standing sculpture that simultaneously acts as a lazy chair and a doghouse. With computer-aided design, the organic form establishes an ergonomic sitting spot for the pet owner while carving a sheltered space underneath for a mid-size dog. This laser-cut plywood assembly represents the combination of modern design technology and traditional hand modeling techniques giving a contemporary aesthetic with a handcrafted element that connects human and dog.

Undercoat House

By

The Undercoat House is inspired by the fact that many dogs have a top coat of fur that is a different color than their undercoat, which can give the dogs a two-toned look from certain angles. This two-toned quality is reflected in the color and angles of the fins on the exterior of the dog house. These fins are backlit to let the house softly light the room it is placed in. The house is rounded to accommodate the ways dogs curl up before lying down. The interior of the house has an opaque shell and soft upholstered bed to provide a sanctuary for the dog in the home.

Cativities Condo

By

Inspired by the playfulness, textures, and sculptural qualities embodied in the “House of Cards” by Ray & Charles Eames. The team looked at how a series of colorful textured surfaced could be stacked into spaces supporting different cat activities. The cat condo tower utilized a dodecahedron geometry to support stacking with openings for cats to climb up and through its structure to augment their daily routines. The different surfaces would provide colorful textures for cats to scratch, rub, sleep, and perch on.  These surfaces also become a sculptural collage for the owner to enjoy.

Shapes & Cats

By

“Shapes & Cats” uses a module that creates purrrfect space3s for our feline friends.  The stackable forms create lounging spots, scratching surfaces, and platforms that allow our pets to reach the top.  The sisal rope column also provides a chance for our climbers to clim and our scratchers to scratch.  The pass-through nature of the module allows us to observe our pets while they watch birds out the window and lounge, all while feeling contained and supported.
