Barkkula
The Barkkula, Swedish for “bark hill,” aims to integrate the dog house into the outdoor living spaces that many dog owners enjoy and utilizes sustainable design strategies such as passive cooling, rainwater collection, and renewable materials. As a K-9 counterpart to the lounge furniture and kitchens many enjoy in their outdoor spaces, the Barkkula’s form takes inspiration from the “hills” for which it is named. It is conceptualized as a kit-of-parts that allows for easier transport, customization, and reconfiguration by the owner. Though each module is similar, each has a unique function and slightly modified geometry–the storage module houses the rooftop planting trays, water storage/ filtration, water bowl, and flexible storage cubbies. While the shelter module provides the dog with shade, protection, and privacy while giving the owner opportunities for reconfiguration by way of the operable windows which dual as a seat.
